The Fazenda Saquarema is located just 80km north of the city of Rio, inside the beautiful lagoon region. Your hosts are a couple of German immigrants, known for their hospitality and top service. They also have two children. The rooms of our farm hotel are cozy and comfortable. Each has its own shower-room, minibar and direct access to the covered veranda. There is also a pool, a sauna and, thanks to the owners' green thumb, a beautiful miniature botanical garden.
Rio´s countryside is full of exuberant tropical nature and beauty, and you will explore this on the back of one of our Mangalarga Marchador and Mangalarga Cross horses. Surrounded by the Atlantic rainforest, you will ride on trails that cut through banana and mango plantations as well as cattle farms, lagoons and beaches.
The Brazilian Mangalarga Marchador horse was bred in 1822 as a cross between a Royal Alter Stallion and native mares of Spanish Jennet and Barb blood, known for their fast but smooth paces. At first they were known as Sublime horses. Now they are seen as the National Horse of Brazil, as well as being one of the most popular and ubiquitous breeds in South America as a whole. Intelligent, regal, alert and of incredible power and endurance, they are renowned for their marchas, or gaits. The marcha picada is a lateral and very smooth movement, while the marcha batida is a diagonal four beat gait that appears to the naked eye to be a trot, yet has very little vertical movement and so is lso extremely smooth. Mangalarga Mix horses are amazingly clever, patient and friendly, and so are perfect for beginner, novice and advanced riders alike, who wish to enjoy a beautiful region with a sweet-tempered four-footed companion.
We pick you up either at the airport or from your Hotel in Rio de Janeiro and transfer you to Fazenda Saquarema, which takes about 2 ½ hrs. After arrival you will have the opportunity to tour the facilities and perhapsenjoy some free time by the pool or explore the beautiful surrounding area. Late afternoon we will take you for a first short ride (30-60 minutes) on the property to ensure the right pairing of horse and rider. For further optional activities on the first day, feel free to ask the multilingual owners of the farm, who have a list of entertaining activities to suggest to you.
The Atlantic coastal rainforest offers rich biodiversity, which you are free to explore. During the ride plantations of tropical fruit and small cattle farms can be observed. The high light of the day, the sunset at Saquarema beach is simply breath taking and should not be missed.
This is an adventurous ride through dense forests and banana plantations. You will cross some creeks and enjoy some wonderful views over the sea from the top of the mountains. In the afternoon, you have the possibility to relax by the pool or further explore the area around the farm. Alternatively, you could take an optional tour to one of the Mangalarga Horse-studs in the region. For further information on this option, which we would recommend, please speak directly to your host.
Sandy tracks will lead you to the Saquarema Lagoon during this full day ride. The lagoon is home to a large number of exotic birds, which you will be able to observe during the ride. The restaurant has alternative options for non-fish eaters.
Depending on your further schedule we transfer you in due time to the airport or to your Hotel in Rio de Janeiro. Check out at the Fazenda is at 12am.
